            Summer is finally officially here. With the summer like feeling of spring it is easy to think that spring is summer sometimes. The fact is summer only officially begins when the Sun enters the Tropical sign of Cancer. This day is marked by the day when we experience the longest hours of daylight in the northern hemisphere. It is also true that from this day onward until Winter Solstice, we will be experiencing the progressive move towards the shortest day of sunlight in the northern hemisphere. The importance of these facts is larger than is generally considered or understood. Beyond the science, there is a psychological effect at play. Moreover, it is even mystical and spiritual. To appreciate this fact is where Astrology comes into the picture. Merely chalking this annual process up to some arbitrary phenomenon could easily be seen as a form of denial. It would also suggest a consciousness that is quite out of tune with and even disdainful of the subtle yet pervasive power of nature and natural cycles. Of course, that is very much the world we have created and now live in. The ecological and environmental crisis that threatens us all is one of the chief consequences of this now lack of attunement to nature and natural cycles. We have learned to be exploitative of rather than cooperative with nature. Another issue is that we have become very dependant upon artificial technologies and in our defence and offense to overcome the vagaries and sometimes violence of nature, we have separated ourselves from nature and now humanity as a whole is in a direr situation than we have ever been before. This is where Astrology comes in because it is a natural psychology and honours nature and her cycles.

            Our attempts to control nature succeed at one level, the conveniences and leverages of our technologies, yet are failing miserably at other levels. Add to this a free market where survival means competition which contributes to compel technologies and actions that can not and/or will not yield to the greater collective and environmental needs of our times. Our challenge now is to re-attune ourselves to nature and bring our science and technology into harmony with it. This implies a significant shift from current attitudes and accepted norms. The first begins with acknowledgement, awareness, awakening and reverence for nature. There are many people and groups focusing on many fronts, dedicated to this process. But, is there enough activists and can the changes in consciousness occur quickly enough? Once we wake-up and snap out of our business as usual attitude, then strategies and solutions will emerge quickly. The next question is: how do you wake-up when you think that you are already awake? These reflect some of the major psychological, spiritual and social political issues of the modern era and every person in every nation of the world shares in this liability and consequently responsibility. Taurus (Apr 20 – May 21)

Building new lines of communication implies building and perhaps repairing bridges. As the metaphor goes, unless you are literally engaged, a will to improve is the source of inventiveness.
